“The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee.” (Jeremiah 31:3 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible.)
Recently I heard a heart breaking story. A lady in her fifties was brought to an assisted living home by her husband who dropped her off. After he left her, the aide was talking with her, and going through the process of making her bed and helping her to feel comfortable at her new home.
He had brought twin-size sheets and her bed was a queen so obviously they would not fit. The aide called him and let the new patient talk with him to ask if he could bring queen sheets. He began screaming and swearing. She hung up the phone and with a sad look on her face said, “He doesn’t want me anymore. He won’t be back.”
As the story unfolded, we learned the man was going on vacation and was leaving her her behind. She had Parkinson disease and dementia. He no longer loved her and didn’t want to take care of her.
Through the years as a pastor’s wife I have heard couples say, “I don’t love her anymore. I don’t love him anymore.”
I’m so thankful for God’s everlasting love. Next year my husband and I will have been married fifty years. My heart is filled with thanksgiving for a man who still loves me like God does.
Prayer: Lord, help all those who feel unloved by humanity find your everlasting love!
