“Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. ”Psalm 73:23-26.
What a dream, or was it a nightmare? You dream that you are falling from a cliff and wake up with your heart pounding. It seems so real and for a few seconds you wonder where you are. How comforting to realize that it was just a dream, but it takes you awhile to go back to sleep, afraid that you will find yourself in the same situation.
When I was a child, I had my tonsils removed and the Doctor gave me Ether. I can still remember the experience – everything was black and white squares. I felt like I was a flat board falling down crevices, banging into walls and just completely out of control. A buzzing noise filled my ears. I shudder even today when I think about it and that was many years ago.
Sometimes in our life we may feel that we are falling and that there is no way out of our circumstances. No matter how we wish it was just a dream, when we wake up the problem is still with us. But, thank the Lord, we have a safety net. Deuteronomy 33:27 tells us “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms:” His presence limits how far we can fall. He may allow us to face difficulties and trials, but we can rest assured that He is always there with us and will provide whatever it needs to keep us safe.
He has promised us that He will not let us face more than we are able to bear. His grace is enough for every day and when we put our faith and trust in Him, we can be assured that the answer is on the way. We can rest secure in those everlasting arms, arms that will never fail.
Prayer: Thank you Lord, for those everlasting arms, arms that enfold me and keep me from harm. No matter what we are facing today, we feel safe in Your everlasting arms.
