I don’t know about you, but I like to eat snacks. I try my very best not to purchase junk food at the grocery store because I don’t have a lot of discipline when snacks are in my cupboard. My discipline works best at the grocery store as I pass by the chips and cookie aisles.
Even though junk food can be oh-so delicious, I become weary of it after awhile. A person can only eat so much Chick-fil-A before they are sick of their famous Chicken Sandwich.
Proverbs 27:7 says, “The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
Isn’t that the truth?
Think ahead with me to Thanksgiving Dinner. The aroma of turkey, sweet potato casserole, pumpkin pie and all the other fixings cause your mouth to water. Your stomach cries out with hunger pains, feed me. After your first serving, you may go up for another, and then you have a slice of pie. If someone tries to put more food on your plate, you will just explode, you are over-the-top stuffed and the thought of one more bite of food is nauseating. You cry out, no I couldn’t eat another bite. The quality of the food did not change, only your hunger level.
However, when you’re truly hungry, close to starvation, anything will taste good. The Bible says that even bitter herbs taste sweet when you’re hungry. When you’re desperate for food, you will go to great lengths to nourish your body.
Matthew 5:6 states, Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
I want to be spiritually hungry for God. I want to be satisfied with any crumb that may fall of His table, or with a feast that He may set before me. I want spiritual hunger pains to encourage a deeper prayer life and more time spent reading His word.
I desire to be hungry enough to step out in faith even though it may not make any sense. I want to be desperate to do whatever I need to do to receive a touch from the Lord.
