“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid.” (Luke 2:8-9 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible.)
We sing Christmas carols once a year without paying attention to the lyrics sometimes. This year I’m trying to grasp what it must have been like before the birth of Jesus. It’s hard to comprehend just how spiritually dark it was before He entered the world.
Jesus came to be the light of the world! Light came into this dark world when Jesus was born. Darkness covered the earth and He was the only one who could change it.
He was born quietly without a lot of fanfare when most of the world lay sleeping. Jesus was God’s pure light. His birth was announced first to shepherds working the night shift. Redeeming grace came when He wrapped Himself in flesh and came to dwell among us.
We sing at Christmas because we have something to sing about! Light has come into our world, and we don’t ever need to walk in darkness again.
Prayer: Jesus, I’m so glad You came into my world so that I could have light. I no longer have to stumble in the dark because You came.
