“Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24).

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Anyone remember whispering this to themselves on the playground when bullies would hurl unkind words your way? At the time it seemed to make sense, but, as you grow older, you realize the powerful influence words can have on you.

Words are oftentimes used as weapons. They can be destructive and overtime can seriously harm one’s emotional, mental and spiritual state. However, this scripture reminds us that pleasant words are sweet to the soul and health to our bones! Think back to one specific time when someone said something kind to you, how it made you feel and how it possibly changed the course of your day.

We should always be mindful of how we speak to others, including our family, friends and neighbours. A kind word can bring life to a situation that may otherwise seem hopeless. Colossians 4:6 reads, “Let your speech be always gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”

If someone has tried to harm you with their words, look beyond what you can see and pray before you speak. Ask God to help you choose your words wisely and speak in love and grace. We have the power to change a situation with one kind word!

Prayer: God, help me to speak with kindness today. Show me how to use wisdom in difficult situations and to see through spiritual eyes. If I have harmed someone with my words, give me the courage to ask for forgiveness. And, if someone has hurt me with their words, help me to extend forgiveness.
