The timing of our words, it really is all in motive… “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver” (Proverbs 25:11, KJV). “The right word at the right time is like a custom-made piece of jewelry, And a wise friend’s timely reprimand is like…
“…He who restrains his lips is wise…and a man of understanding holds his peace.” (Proverbs 10:19, 11:12) Have you ever had one of those “bite your tongue” days? I definitely have, and I’m sure you have to. What I would have said may have been truth, but it would not…
The Bible talks about tasting the Word of God and compares language to the vivid experience of a strong flavor (Psalm 119:103, Hebrews 6:5). I will never forget when an elder lady from a neighboring church hugged me and whispered an encouragement in my ear. I would have been embarrassed…
“Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body” Proverbs 16:24 Have you ever had a conversation with someone and felt dirty afterwards? I have. It doesn’t always even have to be about anything inappropriate, just maybe a little too much time spent talking…
“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14 From the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. The Psalmist was aware of this truth when he wrote this verse. How important it…
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.” Proverbs 25:11
I have always been fascinated by this verse, and can see a picture in my mind of a basket of golden apples set in a silver frame.
I am sure all of us wish that our words always conformed to this picture, but it takes a lot of wisdom to consistently speak words that are pleasing to everyone.
I came up with the following acrostic for Wisdom:
W Words can come so easily
I If we open our mouths wide
S Speaking without thinking
D Destroys our neighbour’s pride.
O Only speak what is good and pleasing to the ear
M Making people happy, spreading hope and cheer.
Prayer: Lord, I desire that my words might always reflect your wisdom, and not offend or hurt anyone else.

“Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24). “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Anyone remember whispering this to themselves on the playground when bullies would hurl unkind words your way? At the time…
“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; For the wrath of a man worketh not the righteousness of God.” (James 1:19-20 from the King James Version of the Holy Bible”) Ever hear the expression, “Think before you speak”? Just a…
“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible). I have always found this scripture to be intriguing. So, today I’d like to explore the thought with you. Mutual conversation with a friend brings light to many…
