Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking scent, Ecclesiastes 10:1. I thought about how a fly in the ointment is a metaphor for unresolved issues in the life of a believer. A tiny, annoying fly can destroy precious and valuable ointment, just as a worried heart can create havoc on your health or secret sin can fester. Imagine the apothecary represents our relationship with the Lord. The ointment is our life’s fragrance of worship and love. And the fly is the thing we wrestle with consistently. Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water. ”So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. (Matthew 14:28-29, NKJV)  Outspoken, impetuous Peter. He had numerous faults, but he was also committed to the Lord and quick to repent when he failed. He seemed to be the unofficial leader of the twelve. Because of his impulsive nature, it isn’t surprising that Peter was the one who asked the Lord if he could walk on…

Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” (John 7:24,ESV) Have you ever assumed something was correct, but that assumption was off the mark? I have—more times than I care to admit. It’s easy to jump to conclusions, but it’s better to confirm the facts. This incident happened quite a few years ago, but I still laugh when I remember. It’s the story of two people looking at the same situation from different perspectives. One had the facts; one made an assumption. To put the incident in perspective, my friend spent most of her adult life as a…

“Then the Assyrian king’s chief of staff told them to give this message to Hezekiah: “This is what the great king of Assyria says: What are you trusting in that makes you so confident?” 2 Kings 18:19 NLT As I was reading through this chapter, this verse really stood out to me. The Assyrian king spent a lot of time mocking and taunting Hezekiah, and no matter what price Hezekiah offered to pay, it was never enough. Another battle was just on the horizon. The question is then posed to Hezekiah “what are you trusting in that makes you so…

Exodus 14:22-25 MSG “The Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground with the waters a wall to the right and to the left. The Egyptians came after them in full pursuit, every horse and chariot and driver of Pharaoh racing into the middle of the sea. It was now the morning watch. God looked down from the Pillar of Fire and Cloud on the Egyptian army and threw them into a panic. He clogged the wheels of their chariots; they were stuck in the mud. The Egyptians said, “Run from Israel! God is fighting on their side and against Egypt!” The Israelites were…
