“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 7:12 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible.)
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is how we often quote this scripture. Recently I heard another way to say this, “Do unto others like you were the others.” I like that version!
This scripture is called “The Golden Rule” or the “Royal Law.” It has been well said that this law is what the balance-wheel is to machinery. If only we could put ourselves in the place of the other, and ask what you would expect of him, then we would be able to show mercy and justice to our fellow man. If you always do right you don’t have to worry about being wrong.
In Matthew 7, Jesus was telling us that this law is the sum of all that is laid down in the Sacred Writings relative to men’s conduct toward each other. It’s one of God’s Laws and we must follow His Laws.
The Message Bible reads, “Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them. Add up God’s Law and Prophets and this is what you get.” Good advice. Lord, help me!
Prayer: I want to follow Your Laws explicitly, Lord. Help me to realize the importance of having a right relationship with others and doing the right thing according to Your Word.
