He made us, and we are his.
We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Psalm 100:3, Holy Bible, New Living Translation

I watched a shepherd relocate his large flock from a depleted pasture to a more nourishing grazing area. The sheep were not distracted by the line of impatient drivers as they crossed the paved road toward greener pastures. They recognized him as their master and followed through unfamiliar territory without fear.

The Lord cares for us as a tender shepherd. When we recognize His sovereignty―that He is the God who created us―then we, like those sheep, will understand that traveling through unfamiliar territory and rough terrain may be His way to guide us on an uncertain journey.

Prayer:  Lord, when I struggle on the rocky trails of the unexpected, I will trust You, my shepherd, to bring me to a place of quiet rest. Amen.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. (Psalm 23:1, Holy Bible, King James Version)

The twenty-third psalm is familiar to most of us. I memorized this full psalm at a young age. Over the years I’ve mellowed it from a clipped childhood cadence to a soothing recitation. I still delight in the scene it evokes when speaking it aloud. I meditate on this opening sentence when money is low or uncertainty overshadows my life. I cling to this verse as a promise that my needs will be provided.

Am I missing the Palmist’s focus? He opens with the phrase, “The LORD is my shepherd.” He focuses on why God provides. The Lord cares for His sheep who acknowledge Him.

Prayer: Lord, my prayers are often “give me.” Today, I ask for nothing. I offer thanks that I am one of Your sheep. Amen.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. (Psalm 23:1, Holy Bible, King James Version)

David wrote a beautiful psalm, a song about sheep that need nothing because the shepherd cares for them completely. This well-known verse is a favorite of many because it speaks of the complete care provided by the shepherd.

Sheep are never puzzled about what tomorrow may bring when they are in the shepherd’s presence. They don’t worry about water, food, or shelter. They are not perplexed about storms of life. They have no concerns about safety from enemies. They trust completely in the shepherd who provides everything for them.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to trust in You completely like a sheep that follows without questioning what tomorrow may bring.  Amen
