“And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.” Psalm 40:3

It has been a stormy day, the winds have howled, the rain has fallen steadily, and all the world looks dark and grey.  As evening falls, the little bird seeks a sheltered place in the cedar tree, tucks her head into her wing, and closes her eyes.  Without fear she drifts off to sleep, knowing that her creator is watching over her and she can rest. As morning breaks, she shakes her feathers, hops out to the end of a branch, and lifts her voice in song and praise to God. The storm may still be raging, but she has rested through the night and gained strength to face another day.

As we journey through life there are bound to be days when we face storms of some kind.  It may be a time of sickness, or even death of a loved one.  It may be loss of a job, an emergency, or a financial setback.  It may be a child that is going through a time of rebellion, that we just don’t know how to cope with. There are so many things that can happen in our lives to make us fearful and afraid.

Those are the times when we remember the scripture, we have committed to memory that promise us the Lord is always there for us.  How comforting to be able to lay our head on our pillow, and rest in the promises He has given us to never leave nor forsake us. We can whisper a prayer for His hand to keep us through the night. And in the morning, we can rise with a song in our heart.  The burden may still be there, but we have assurance that He is working all things for our good.

Lamentations 3:22-23 “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

Psalm 30:5 “weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning.”

There’s a song we used to sing: “You can have a song in your heart in the night, after every trial, after every mile.  Anyone can sing when the sun’s shining bright, but you need a song in your heart in the night.”

Are you carrying a heavy load today?  Are burdens pressing you down and robbing you of joy?  Be like the little bird.  As you go sleep at night, just cast all your cares upon the Lord, rest in Him, and awake to praise Him.  He will carry the load for you and give you peace amid the storm.

Jesus, I am so thankful that I know the Master of the wind, the maker of the storm.  You can calm the storm and make the sun shine again.  Help us to cast every care upon you and let your song of joy fill our hearts.
