Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it . . . How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? (Hebrews 2: 1, 3, ESV) As I write this devotion, I am waiting for a repairman to arrive. No, nothing is broken, but I’m doing some preventive maintenance. I have friends who don’t see the need of paying a service call if everything still works. That penny-pinching can end up costing more in repairs than paying for a seasonal checkup. In some instances, the neglected maintenance creates an…
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. (Romans 12:12, ESV) Listening to a man being interviewed on the radio, I questioned one bold statement when he declared, “I never have a bad day.” Never? I think most of us would readily admit we’ve had good days…
“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (Psalm 139:23-24) I believe all of us appreciate openness and honesty in others. If we are purchasing an appliance,…

“You ought to say instead, ‘If the Lord is willing, then we will live and do this or that.’” (James 4:15, New English Translation). A good friend and I live about fifty miles apart. It’s not a great distance, but meeting for lunch requires extra planning. We don’t just run into each other around town. This week we texted about our next time together, and my friend added two small words to the end of her message: “Lord willing.” Growing up, it wasn’t unusual to hear this phrase tagged onto many conversations, such as, “I’ll see you next week, Lord…
One of my favorite worship songs right now is “Looking Up,” as sung by Nashville Life, and featuring vocalist CeCe Winans. The chorus alone is worth the listen, but there are two lines that thrill my soul with HOPE : All of my problems are below You. All that I need is in the palm of Your hands. Did you catch that?! The problems aren’t below US — they’re below GOD! OUR problems are below HIM. Under our God’s feet. We only need to focus upward. Not outward. Not inward. Certainly not downward. UPWARD. Look UP! Secondly, every single thing that…
“Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose damsel is this? And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab:” Ruth 2:5-6 It was no coincidence that Ruth began her gleaning in the fields of Boaz. Naomi had directed her because there was a plan forming in her mind. She knew the law that when a man died without children, a close relative could marry the widow and raise up children in the man’s name. This…
“Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:” (2 Corinthians 3:2 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible).
The city of Corinth was an exceedingly immoral and abandoned place according to Barnes’ Commentary. In spite of the condition of this city a large number had been converted to Christianity and a church was organized. The news had spread abroad. Paul was proud of them and wanted the Corinthians to know their conversions had made a difference. There is nothing better than being a testimony of what God has done in your life. A testimony is not what is said necessarily but what is lived out in our lives. Regardless of how rough your neighborhood is someone is reading your life page by page and deciding if they want to embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ; it’s the Gospel according to you! Don’t forget, actions speak louder than words!
Prayer: Lord, let my life be a testimony that others are drawn to by my actions. Let others see Jesus in me. My city needs You and I can lead them to You.
