“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you:  not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”  (John 14:27 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible.)

Jesus was giving His disciples a heads up before His approaching death.  He knew that in just a few hours they would be powerfully assaulted.  But, the evil that would fall on Him would result in comfort and salvation.  His purpose to redeem a lost world would be fulfilled.

His parting gift to the disciples was peace.  It was a peace that the world could not give. It was God’s peace.  The world tries to give peace but it’s superficial and doesn’t last long.  God didn’t want to leave His followers feeling abandoned and hopeless.

Not long ago we were singing this old chorus in church:

“Peace, peace, wonderful peace coming down from the Father above.

Sweep over my spirit forever I pray in fathomless billows of love.”

Real peace comes from above.  It’s His peace He left for all of us.  His Spirit brings peace for there is “Righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost” (Romans 14:17).

Prayer:  Thank You, Lord, for giving us peace in a world full of unrest.  We can rely on You knowing that You are the author, prince, promoter, and keeper of peace.  Amen!
