“Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped. And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” (Job 1:20-21 in the King James Version of the Holy Bible.)
As a young child, I still remember learning how to add and subtract. It was exciting for Mom to show me flashcards and to know the answer. Then I graduated to multiplication. Memorizing the multiplication tables was self-gratifying.
Life is full of mathematics. Job said it well, “…The Lord gave (+), and the Lord hath taken away (-).” To receive the pluses in life is great, but to experiences minuses from our life is difficult. I find it interesting that this scripture is in the first chapter of Job after he had lost it all. Job knew God was in control of his life and he said, “…blessed be the name of the Lord.”
Prayer: Lord, You are in charge of giving and taking from us. I want my response to be like Job. Regardless of what life brings to me whether pluses or minuses, I will continue to worship You knowing that You know what is best for me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen!
