“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.” Psalm 37:23-24

In ourselves we cannot claim to be good, but because we delight in the way of the Lord, He looks upon our heart and counts us as good in His sight.  We all have lots of faults and failures, but as we seek the Lord, He gives us the strength to overcome them. He promises us that when we fail, we are not a failure, He lifts us with His hand and brings us back on the right path.

C. S. Lewis wrote: “We must lay before Him what is in us, not what ought to be in us.” We have a desire to be counted as good in God’s sight, and he sees that desire, and leads us day by day to become good.

David failed the Lord in so many ways, but the Bible tells us that He encouraged Himself in the Lord.  He recognized his failings and was quick to repent and seek God’s help to overcome them.  Because of this, the Lord counted him as faithful.

Abraham was not perfect, he made mistakes as well.  But His faith in God never wavered, and because of this God counted Him as righteous.

We do not trust in our own goodness; all our righteousness is as filthy rags in God’s sight.  But because we have trusted in the blood of Christ, we rest assured in the promise that it cleanses us from all sin.  He will never leave us nor forsake us, if we delight in Him and consistently seek His face.  He sees us as a good man (or woman) and keeps us safe.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, you know my heart better than I know it myself, I need your guidance every day.
