“And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.” 2 Kings 4:7 The woman in the above story was a widow who fell into financial trouble after her husbands passing. When Elisha passes by she calls out to him that her husband is dead,…
“He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.” Psalms 147:3 I have a two daughters who love band-aids. We go through boxes of them because they “need” a band-aid for every boo boo. If one of them stubs her toe, band-aid. If the other bruises her leg, band-aid. And of…

The tongue that heals is a tree of life, but a devious tongue breaks the spirit. (Proverbs 15:4, Christian Standard Bible) Have you ever wondered how many words the average person knows? One source says the average twenty-year-old American has knowledge of 42,000 words. Whether that is high, low, or on target, I don’t know. But what I do wonder is how many of those words are kind words, or as Proverbs 15:4 says, healing words. Have you ever considered the power of your words on those you interact with each day? What kind of words come out of your…
“Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.” I Samuel 1:20 A new baby! A time of rejoicing. Can you imagine the joy in Hannah’s heart as she held this precious boy in her arms for the first time? All the times of sorrow and of rejection were forgotten, and she was now fulfilled. She named him, Samuel, meaning “I have asked him of the Lord.” Hannah was very dedicated. She knew she would…

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it,” (Matthew 13:45-46 from the Holy Bible New King James). This parable is a reminder that natural pearls were valued beyond other treasures in ancient times. Formed by irritations caused by foreign particles, wild mollusks or oysters produced rare natural gems with incomparable beauty. Mass produced cultured pearls from controlled environments are common look-alikes, often the same size, shape and color of lesser value. Christians cultivated in a sheltered atmosphere without life’s intrusions are like cultured pearls. They can’t match the beauty and strength of those who conquered circumstances and became priceless treasures.

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). At this time of year, many people talk about the New Year’s resolutions they have made for the coming year. The list may be long or short; but as we all know, resolutions are easier to make than they are to keep. Many resolutions are rather predictable–lose weight, exercise more, eat healthier, budget better. When we start thinking of our spiritual life, those resolutions tend to be predictable as well. We decide we will pray more, read our…
